History of the electricity grid



The first power station in Baku was installed in 1895 at the Baku docks on the Bayil highway. According to the documents of the State Historical Archive of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the current was supplied by the dynamo-machine of the German-made "Algemayne" system.

In 1898-1899, the Baku branch of the Joint Stock Company named "Elektricheskaya sila" (Electric power) was established in the city. This Society, in turn, was a branch of the "Electric Lighting Society" of 1886 of the "Siemens and Galske" firm.

In 1900, the company "Siemens and Galske" started the construction of a second power plant in Bibiheybet - Bayıl promontory and Kara city (now Agh city). In 1902, the power plant was put into operation in Kara city. In 1903 the number of power plants reached 70.

In March 1906, the transmission of electricity was started for the first time. Two 8.1 km long 20 kV electric overhead lines have been built from the power substation in Karashahr to the Balakhani oil fields.

The next development took place in 1909-1920. Over 60 substations were built in Balakhani, Ramana and Surahani districts.

In 1920, the energy enterprises located in the territory of the republic were nationalized and the "Elektrotok" department was created on their basis.

The Baku Electricity Network has been operating since 1920 under various organizations. Until 1929, it was part of the "Elektrotok" division of Azneft, and in 1929, by the decision of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR, the Baku City Electric Network (BCEN) was included in the Baku City Council. In 1963, by the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan, it was subordinated to the General Department of Energy and Electrification. From 1969 to 2000, the Baku City Executive Committee worked as part of the Baku City Executive Power.

The construction of large substations, generating plants and power lines became widespread only in the 70s of the last century. The initiator of this work at that time was the National Leader Heydar Aliyev, the new president of the Republic.


By the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated June 14, 2000, "Bakielektrikshabeka" Open Joint-Stock Company was established in order to improve the functioning of the capital's electric network and to improve the supply of electricity to the city. From 02.01.2002 to 03.07.2006, it was managed by the Turkish company "Barmek Holding A.Ş". By the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated 10.08.2006, the activity of "Bakielektrikshabaka" OJSC was restored. development and investment after being In order to carry out its work, a corresponding order was issued on the allocation of financial assistance from the President's reserve fund. By the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev dated February 10, 2015, the name of "Bakielektrikshabeka" OJSC was changed to "Azerishiq" OJSC in order to ensure reliable, safe and efficient electricity supply. Consumers in the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan (except for the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic) were entrusted to the holding company "Azerishiq" OJSC.
